aplay as nobody works, as I already added nobody to the audio group

the result of running with -n root is this
root at debian:~/pianod-144# ./src/pianod -n root -i ~/startscript
2013-06-01 04:58:20: No user data found. Creating admin user.
fb_setup_ip6_socket: bind: Address already in use
2013-06-01 04:58:24: alsa audioOutDriver = (null),

2013-06-01 04:58:24: ao_default_driver_id audioOutDriver (null),

ao_alsa debug: Trying to open ALSA device 'front'

but now I am unable to finish my last step, sending

SET AUDIO OUTPUT DRIVER alsa
SET AUDIO OUTPUT DEVICE "stereo3"

results in it still playing off the default card defined in /etc/asound.conf

After all these hurdles I feel I am almost there!
