I can say that I get "Unknown PCM cards.pcm.front" when my setup is 
working, so that shouldn't be a big concern until you are really trying 
to get surround sound working.  I don't know why you're getting the 
"invalid value for card".

But you said aplay works when you run it as root?  What if you run 
pianod with -nroot?  What if you run aplay as nobody?  The method I use 
for that, which may not be optimal, is "sudo su nobody".
