site (2008)
St. John Fisher College professor David White is one of the world's leading scholars on Bishop Joseph Butler, Anglican theologian (1692-1752). When he wanted to revamp his Butler research web site, he chose Devious Fish. The goal of the project was to provide improved navigation and a modern look. The project included addition of a navigation menu, correction of HTML defects, and improvements to mark-up. Defunct links to historical documents were corrected by locating alternate copies on the Internet, and links were added to several additional texts available from Google Books.- Compare: The original Butler site
- Flex Gym &
Aerobics Center (2008)
I coordinated with Tom Renner, B.S., M.S., owner of Flex over a period of about three weeks to develop this site. Before an initial meeting, I constructed a basic navigation plan, some layout ideas, and draft text for the front page. After discussing these and other details at the meeting, development commenced properly. Mark-up from the second meeting yielded a live site while further development was underway. The third meeting yielded a near-finished site and improved navigation, with some details like better photographs still to be completed. - Bertrand Russell Society
(2008)
The BRS annual meeting was held in Rochester, and they wanted a web site to disseminate information to their members and the world at large. Included here is the site according to my original vision— for organizational reasons, on the actual site the program and detailed schedules were created and maintained by the parties managing the presentation schedule. - Bogo's restaurant
(2008)
This site for fictional restaurant is intended to provide insight into appropriate navigation and content for a restaurant. The home page is rotated daily to always provide today's hours and specials.
Risque sites
It's hard to surf the Internet without encountering adult content offering everything from "male enhancement" to sexual liaisons. Below, we provide links to some samples commissioned by adult agencies. The sites presented here are non-pornographic adult content. While there are no nudes, the topics are definitely focused on adult interest and may be offensive to some. Please consider your personal sensitivities and any applicable Internet use policies before proceeding.
- Rochester Kink Society
(2007)
RKS is a local group of BDSM (sadomasochism) enthusiasts. The site provides an overview of the group's activities and history, and provides details on how to get involved. The version presented here is the final version before it was handed over to RKS' web maintainer; you can also visit the live version of the site. This site replaced a previous one that was several years old. I worked in close coordination with select members of the group in choosing a color scheme, setting up the navigation topics, and other detail work. As the work approached completion, it went through a repeated review process starting with those in leadership roles within RKS, and ending with a final review by the entire membership.
In addition to content updates, the navigation menu was expanded in this edition to provide easier access to information. To avoid the menu becoming unwieldy, headings were added to separate the long list into manageable-size groups. On certain pages, additional entries on the menu (always with their own heading) provide information or navigation to particular topics listed on the page.
On a more technical note, there are some nice features in this site:
- When printed, the navigation menu is excluded, as is the Newsletter Archive section of the "About RKS" page.
- When printed, contact information on the home page differs to reflect the differences in medium. An on-line reader is provided a link to send e-mail to the group, whereas the hard copy provides the actual e-mail address. The print edition also provides a mailing address for those without e-mail.
- The calendar appears as a calendar in print and on standard screens. To accommodate limited width on handheld devices, it is arranged as a list.1 For similar reasons, navigation menus appear above the calendar on all screens: as a horizontal list for traditional screens but a vertical list on handheld devices. All of this "magic" is done with CSS.
- The calendar, events list, and upcoming events list on the
welcome page are generated from iCalendar files, a standard format
(RFC 2445) which can be generated from various calendar software.
These are fed into a customized version of W3C's
ical2html, which produces the calendars for the web site. This process is automated.
