I was never really able to get this solved however I did setup a decent work around.
I use a nagios check command (script) to check the output of wsgw (via telnet) for "Playing" if nagios doesn't see "Playing" in the response nagios restarts the pianod service. I'm not saying this is a solution for you (it would be extreme to setup a nagios server just for this) but with some scripting and cron job you could setup the same thing locally on the Pi. The downside I've found with my work around is that this method of constantly checking (I check every 2 seconds) and restarting seems to put a heavy load on SD Cards and I burn through them rapidly (maybe 2 every 6 months).

I've got both pianod and pianobar installed on the raspberry pi with arch linux. While pianobar plays without interruptions, pianod consistently seems to stall for brief periods. My bandwidth looks to be ok as I can stream video without issues.
Is there anything I can do to solve this?

I'd prefer to stick with pianod as I like the ability to use it as a
service without needing to keep a logged in session alive. I also like
stopping and starting pianod through systemctl... something I couldn't
manage to do with pianobar. So if could just overcome the "stalled" issue,
I'd be happy with pianod.

I felt the same way - but i didnt have weeks on end to play w it.. One person said they setup a nagios script to watch status and restart.. Thats too much infrastructure for me
With pianobar - i just changed the runlevel to auto login under X and setup a startup shell of pianobar.. So its not too complex
