Hmm, does the distro have separate packages for libjson and libjson-c, 
or did it put both those in from a single package?  Is one set symlinks 
to the other or are they both binaries?  Maybe there's some confusion 
because there are two versions?  But it seems like it should still be 
able to find the function in either version.

Maybe it's just because the lib is under arm-linux-gnueabihf that 
configure is not finding it?

In your config.log  there were more lines after the short section I 
included in my reply; it said conftest.c is in 
/root/pianod-144/conftest.c and it printed the contents.
